Resume accomplishments are work achievements performed by a job seeker that are both measurable and unique to their experience. Accomplishments on a resume are different than duties or responsibilities in that duties and responsibilities are virtually the same for any employee in a similar role. Using resume accomplishments in place of responsibilities makes the most out of resume space by showing the hiring manager that you are results-driven and have the drive to go beyond the expected job requirements.
Unlike many employees, you actively work to make improvements and create impact within the company. It can be challenging to sit down and actually lay out your resume accomplishments. Ask yourself a few questions to start generating ideas for your summary of accomplishments:. When answering these questions, think primarily in terms of money and time. High-quality resume accomplishments are quantifiable and measurable.
Dollar amounts, timespans, volume, and percentages are all great ways to quantify your accomplishments on a resume. Consider the CAR formula if you get stuck. Every accomplishment should include the problem or challenge, the action you took, and the stellar result of your hard work. You can also invert this formula by leading with the result. Starting a sentence with a dollar figure or percentage will garner more attention.
Make sure your accomplishments are taken seriously by including context when possible. Along with measurable results, resume keywords can make resume accomplishments stand out. Reference the job posting to figure out which keywords the hiring manager will be looking for most. Want to test your resume for accomplishments and measurable results?

Facebook Comments.Employers LOVE to ask questions about your greatest professional achievement or accomplishment… and they expect a detailed example or story! So you need to be ready. If your best, most impressive accomplishment is five years ago, you can still use it! Show exactly what you achieved and why it was a significant accomplishment. How did it help you? How did it help your team or your employer at the time?
If you just graduated and your accomplishment was in an internship or in a university class, what did you learn, what challenges did you overcome, and how did this help you get to where you are today? This way, you only need to have one answer for however they phrase the question. In this case, you should give an example of your greatest achievement from a class project or from your academic studies. It could be achieving a high GPA, finishing first in your class, practicing and delivering a speech in front of a class, being the first in your family to graduate with a degree, or anything like that.
After this, review the details of the story and situation. I had no financial support from my family and had to work a full-time job while pursuing my Economics degree. This taught me to prioritize my time, build great habits and stay focused on my goals. When I joined, the entire team was struggling and we were failing to hit our quarterly goals. I was hired to create a new marketing plan, which I designed and implemented without any guidance.
This additional revenue brought the company from an operating loss each quarter to profitability.

What piece of the story are they likely to want more information about? What might they not understand the first time you tell it? Nothing comes out perfect the first time — so make sure to practice a few times before going into your next interview! Go over the key points you want to share, and make sure you can explain the story clearly while transitioning from one key point to another.
Make sure you can get from the beginning of your story to the end when explaining your greatest achievement to employers, without forgetting any pieces of your story. The closer you are to the top of the corporate hierarchy, the more likely it is that your individual successes are going to impact the success of the business as a whole.
Consider this achievement for a Vice President, Sales of a consumer goods brand:. How did their biggest competitor fare that year? How did the sales team perform the year before, or under the previous VP? This is my go-to for a simple achievement across all levels. Taking the above example, and rewriting it to have more impact using the ARTA method, we get:. So what does that mean in practice?
At this level, recruiters want to see achievements that show you can deliver operational pieces that feed into the strategic priorities of the business, and that you can operate with one foot in strategy, and one in the day-to-day. Achievements should focus on leadership competencies, particularly those related to people and culture, business direction, strategy and roadmaps, and commercial performance.
Finance : Transitioned the company from a net loss to a gain position and addressed overspending, inefficiencies, and a lack of robust controls by leading company-wide policy shifts, upskilling divisional leaders, and transforming the culture from one of unchecked spending to one of fiscal restraint.
