It only takes a minute to sign up. I'm working on a computationally heavy code that - for now - crashes a lot, but I'm still working on it : When it crashes, I can't close the GUI window; I have to open a shell and kill -9 the process. Now it is easy but quite a mechanical task. So normally i wait for about processes to crash, and then kill -9 each of them.
I want to do this in an automatic way. I think that it should be easy to pipe some commands to take the id of the n-1 results of ps aux grep java and kill it but I don't have any idea where to start.
Basically the result from the inner command will be used as an argument to kill. This has the benefit of finer control over what is killed. For example, if you're on a shared system you can edit the search terms so that it only attempts to kill your own java processes. If you want to kill all processes that are named java you can use following command:. You may wish to consider what other resources your killing of the Java process in this way such as database connections will be affected.
For example, perhaps kill would be more appropriate - see the explanation here. Here is an alternative approach, based on Dean's earlier answer.

If, however, you want to kill the wskInterface process in particular, then you're most of the way there, you just need to strip out the process id.
Use jps to list running java processes. The command returns the process id along with the main class. You can use kill command to kill the process with the returned id or use following one liner script.
Whatever that does, it seems very finicky about actually grepping through what ps aux shows me clearly is there. Learn more. Asked 7 years, 10 months ago. Active 2 months ago. Viewed k times. I want linux script to kill java program running on console. Following is the process running as jar. Active Oldest Votes. You can simply use pkill -f like this: pkill -f 'java -jar' EDIT: To kill a particular java process running your specific jar use this regex based pkill command: pkill -f 'java.
Yes you can add jar name as well. I'm always amazed to see grep s piped into awk s!!! Shall we call this Useless Use Of Grep?

Anyways, it's much better to use pkill with the -f option as anubhava mentioned if you have pkill installed of course, and if it has the -f option. Faisalkhan That's because you tried to kill the ps process itself Don't use this method, use anubhava's instead.
And yep, I knew this method was a little off when I typed it, but it should work. And it's beardy, which I enjoy. Nithin Adike Nithin Adike 11 1 1 bronze badge.
